Computer Classes

Our Computer ClassroomThe Center has a wonderfully-equipped, 12-computer classroom to teach computer courses and offers hands-on instruction for adults in the South King and North Pierce counties.

In these courses you can learn the basic skills of using a computer; get advice on purchasing a new or used computer, or upgrading an existing system; and, review the selection of appropriate Our computers. Please note that we only teach the use of PCs (Personal Computers, such as Dell, IBM, HP, Gateway), and not Apple/Macs. Courses are priced at a very reasonable $2.00 / class hour, plus the price of the textbook. In many cases, books are optional or the student can sell them back at the end of the course.

The following classes are offered from September through May, whenever we have at least six interested students for a specific course. The classes are two-hours sessions with morning classes beginning at 9:30 and afternoon classes starting at 1:00.

Course Descriptions

Beginners Class provides an introduction to the Windows Operating System, teaches the computer keyboard and its unique keys not on a typewriter, and techniques for proper use of a mouse. Included is the use of a typing program for those who want it. A brief introduction is provided to other programs typically found on a computer, as well as the Internet. This course meets weekly for five 2-hour sessions.

Prerequisites: None. Prior experience is not needed, nor do you need to have access to a computer or buy one before taking the class.

Cost: $20.00.

Digital Photo Editing uses Corel's MediaOne (version 2.1) photo editing program to teach basic digital photo editing skills such as red-eye removal, cropping, color correction, and touch-ups. It also covers emailing/attaching photos, and special photography projects. The skills learned in this class with MediaOne can easily be transferred to your own photo editing program. This course meets weekly for four 2-hour sessions. 

Cost: $16.00 for tuition and $4.00 for handouts (total: $20.00).

Introduction to Facebook will show you the ins and out of this popular, social networking website. You will create a Facebook account, fill out your profile, learn about security and privacy issues, and explore the many facets of this site. Note: you will need an email address to sign up for a Facebook account. This course meets twice in one week, for 2-hour sessions each time.

Cost: $8.00 for tuition and $2.00 for handouts (total: $10.00).

Internet and Email covers the ins-and-outs of e-mail, including attaching and downloading documents; searching the internet; security issues; and, generally become familiar with the World Wide Web. Be introduced to YouTube, online shopping security, virus protection, and mapping skills. This course will be held weekly for six 2-hour sessions.

Note: Students will get much more out of the class if they have access to the internet at home or the office. An email address is also highly suggested.

Cost: $24.00 for tuition and $5.00 for handouts (total: $29.00).

Microsoft Office 2003 class teaches the Office basics, working with files, Office Internet and Graphics tools, Word processing, Excel spreadsheets and brief discussions of PowerPoint presentations, Access databases and Office Internet tools. This class meets weekly for eight 2-hour sessions.

Prerequisites: Windows XP Operating System class or instructor permission based upon prior experience. Each student must purchase the following text prior to the first class session: Teach Yourself Visually Microsoft Office 2003 2nd Edition by Wiley. ISBN: 0-7645-9687-X

Cost: $32.00 tuition plus the text, which will cost approximately $25.00.

Microsoft Office 2007 class teaches the Office basics, working with files, Office Internet and Graphics tools, Word Processing, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations.  This class meets weekly for eight 2-hour sessions.

Prerequisites: Windows Vista Operating System class or instructor permission based upon prior experience. Each student must purchase the following text prior to the first class session: Teach Yourself Visually Microsoft Office 2007 by Wiley. ISBN: 978-0-470-04590-9

Cost: $32.00 tuition plus the text, which will cost approximately $25.00.

Safe and Secure Online helps students navigate a “collision free” journey on the information super-highway, better known as the internet. A hands-on class covering virus protection programs, firewalls, spyware, secure shopping, and other topics dealing with keeping your computer protected while on the internet. This course meets weekly for three 2-hour sessions. 

Cost: $8.00.

Self-Help Program is not a formal course. This program is offered to adults who wish to add to, or improve, their job skills and upgrade their job resume to assist in securing employment. It is also available to people who do not wish to take a formal multi-week course and only need minor clarification or assistance in using any of the above computer programs. An teacher is onsite, but formal instruction is not offered; instead we have "Teach Yourself" instruction books available for you to use. A donation of only $1.00 per hour is suggested.

The Computer Classroom is open from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm each Friday.  Please call 253-927-6974  by Thursday noon to reserve a computer for that Friday and to make sure someone will be available for your specific need. Windows XP or Vista Operating System classes teach the basics of these systems and how to use the built-in features. These classes meet weekly for eight 2-hour sessions.

Prerequisites for Windows XP: Beginners class or instructor permission based upon prior experience. Must have access to a computer with Windows XP Operating System at home or work. Each student must purchase the textbook prior to the first class. The book is: "maran Illustrated Windows XP, covering Windows XP Service Pack 2", ISBN 1-59200-870-4.

Prerequisites for Windows Vista: Beginners class or instructor permission based upon prior experience. Must have access to a computer with Vista Operating System at home or work. For Windows Vista, the student must purchase the textbook prior to the first class. The book is: "Teach Yourself Visually; Windows Vista", ISBN 0-470-04573-6 or 978-0-470-04573-2 (same book, just two different ISBNs due to new numbering system).

Cost for either class: $32.00 tuition plus the text, which will cost approximately $25.00.
