Computer Classes

Our Computer ClassroomThe Center has a wonderfully-equipped, 12-computer classroom-teach computer courses and offers hands-on instruction for adults in the South King and North Pierce counties.

In these courses you can learn the basic skills of using a computer; get advice on purchasing a new or used computer, or upgrading an existing system; and, review the selection of appropriate Our computers. Please note that we only teach the use of PCs (Personal Computers, such as Dell, IBM, HP, Gateway), and not Apple/Macs. Courses are priced at a very reasonable $4.00 / class hour, plus the price of the any textbook or materials needed.

Below are our class descriptions, or you can click on the name of any class-get a more detailed explanation. Classes are offered January through May, whenever we have at least three interested students for a specific course. The classes are two-hours sessions with morning classes beginning at 9:30 and afternoon classes starting at 1:00.

Classes are over for the year at the Senior Center; we will resume them in September 2014. You can see what we offered this "school year" by reading the Course Descriptions below. Course Descriptions

Beginners Class provides an introduction to the Windows Operating System, teaches the computer keyboard and its unique keys not on a typewriter, and techniques for proper use of a mouse. Included is the use of a typing program for those who want it. A brief introduction is provided to other programs typically found on a computer. This course meets weekly for five 2-hour sessions.

Prerequisites: None. Prior experience is not needed, nor do you need to have access to a computer or buy one before taking the class.

Cost: $40.00; includes handouts.
 


Digital Photo Editing uses Picasa--a free photo-editing and organization program--to teach basic digital photo editing skills such as red-eye removal, cropping, color correction, and touch-ups. It also covers emailing/attaching photos, and special photography projects. This course meets weekly for four 2-hour sessions. 

Cost: $35.00; includes handouts
 


Excel 2010 teaches the Office basics and covers all the Excel processing features
illustrated in the textbook described below. Also, a CD is provided to each student which contains the same practice files used in the classroom. This class meets weekly for three 2-hour sessions. 

Prerequisites: Windows 7 Operating System class or instructor permission based upon your experience. Each student must purchase this textbook prior to the first class session: Teach Yourself Visually Microsoft Office 2010 (this is the same book used for the Office 2010 class).

Cost: $25.00, in addition-the text described above.
 


Excel 2013 covers all the Excel processing features illustrated in the textbook described below.  Also a CD is provided which contains the same practice files used in the classroom. This class meets weekly for three 2-hour sessions. 

Prerequisites: covers all the Excel processing features illustrated in the textbook. Also a CD is provided which contains the same practice files used in the classroom. 

Cost: $25.00, plus the textbook (suggested price of $35.99).


Introduction to Facebook will show you the ins and out of this popular social networking website. You will fill out your profile, learn about security and privacy issues, and explore the many facets of this site. This course is for two weeks.

Cost: $19.00; includes handouts

Note: A Facebook account is HIGHLY suggested in order to get the most out of the class. If you do not already have a Facebook account, you will need to come to the first session 30 minutes early in order to set one up. An email address is required to start a Facebook account.
 


Navigating the Internet covers basic internet skills, search engines, security issues, and generally becoming familiar with the World Wide Web. You'll also be introduced-online shopping security, virus protection, and online maps and a whole lot of other thing! This course will be held weekly for three 2-hour sessions. (Be sure-check out the Using Email class, which is a "companion" class to Navigating the Internet.)

Note: Students will get much more out of the class if they have access to the Internet at home or the office, but it is not required.

Cost: $26.00; includes handouts


PowerPoint 2010 covers creating presentation slides.  These include colorful pictures and audio (voice and/or music). The CD provided adds detail not covered in the text. This class meets weekly for two 2-hour sessions. 

Prerequisites: Windows 7 Operating class or instructor permission. Each student must purchase the following text prior-the first class session: Teach Yourself Visually: Microsoft Office 2010. The author is Kate Shoup and the ISBN number  is: 978-0-470-57193-4. The suggested price is $30.00.

Cost: $16.00, plus the textbook

Self-Help Program is not a formal course. This program is offered-adults who wish to add to, or improve, their job skills and upgrade their job resume to assist in securing employment. It is also available to people who do not wish to take a formal multi-week course and only need minor clarification or assistance in using any of the above computer programs. An teacher is onsite, but formal instruction is not offered; instead we have "Teach Yourself" instruction books available for you to use. A donation of $4.00 per hour is suggested.

The computer classroom is available from 1:00 pm-3:00 pm each Friday for those who have called by Wednesday 5 pm-reserve space. Please call Larry Malcom at 253-839-5418-discuss your needs and make the reservation.


Using Email covers composing and replying to emails, attaching and downloading documents, contact lists and generally becoming familiar with your email program. You'll also be discover how to spot spam, hoaxes and phishing emails. This course will be held weekly for three 2-hour sessions. (Note: also check out the Navigating the Internet, which is a "companion" class to Using Email.) 

Note: Students will get much more out of the class if they have access to the internet at home or the office. An email address is also REQUIRED (if you don't have an email address, we can set you up with one!).

Cost: $26; includes handouts


Windows 7 Operating System classes teach the basics of these systems and how to use the built-in features. This class meets weekly for six 2-hour sessions.

Prerequisites for Windows 7: Beginners class or instructor permission based upon prior experience. Must have access to a computer with Windows 7 at home or work. Each student must purchase the textbook prior to the first class, which is Teach Yourself Visually; Windows 7, ISBN 978-0-470-50386-7.

Cost: $50.00, plus the textbook, which will cost approximately $25.00.


Windows 8.1 Operating System class will use the classroom desktop computers (without touch screens). The class will start by covering the various ways to navigate the start screen as well as the desktop screen. Then the text subjects will be reviewed which include how to work with files and applications (called Apps). This class meets weekly for six 2-hour sessions.

Prerequisites: 
Beginners class or instructor permission based on prior experience. Each student must have access to a computer with Windows 8.1. The textbook Teach Yourself Visually Windows 8.1 by Paul McFedries is required.

Cost: $50.00 plus the textbook (suggested price $30.00).


Word 2010 teaches the basics of Microsoft Office and covers all the word processing features illustrated in the textbook (below). Also, the CD provided to each student contains files associated with creating mailing lists. This class meets weekly for four 2-hour sessions.

Prerequisites: Windows 7 Operating System class or instructor permission based upon your experience. Each student must purchase the following text prior to the first class session, which is Teach Yourself Visually; Microsoft Office 2010. This is the same book used for the Office 2010 class.

Cost: $32.00 tuition in addition to the text described above.
